El primer FSM fue organizado por la Asociaci\u00f3n internacional para la Tasaci\u00f3n de las Transacciones Financieras para la Ayuda al Ciudadano (Attac) y el Partido de los Trabajadores de Brasil (PT). Se llev\u00f3 a cabo del 25 al 30 de enero de 2001 en Porto Alegre.
