Y promete no detenerse.

The successful incursion of the yellow vest social protest in France has put upside down the analysts from the establishment. Workers that come together in a space and common sense: they are instatisfied with an unfair system. The key of this movement is not just the raise of the fuel price, is the exhaustion of the governments that rule for the rich.

A lot had been talked about who are the people behind the yellow vests as a way of discredit a movement that had put their voice as global alert against the third neoliberal wave and the increasing weight of an insatiable capitalism that falls off the backs of the workers.

The last three French governments have chosen as fiscal policy the raise of the inequality. They have reduced taxes for the businessmen, the millionaires and the great fortunes. In the other side, they have strangled the workers, they cut rights and they pretended that the capitalist crisis should be paid by those at the bottom and not by the top ones.

The conservative and technocratic government of Emmanuel Macron has announced a raise in the fuel price for January. During this year, the raise had already reached 23%. From the high tower where Macron rule far away from the people, he shows the hate that he feels for the poor.

For the surprise of the government, the mass media and the social, union and political organizations of France, a movement without references or visible leaderships or organizational structure have put upside down the manichean vision of the reality reproduced by the media. The visibility of the social anger in times of Revolution 4.0 was the utilization of those yellow vests which the drivers are forced to use obligatorily when they have to get out of their cars in the route. That visibility is going around the world today.

The call for a demonstration in the streets appeared by WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook and four weeks later this movement already has the support of 72% of the population and its effect has spread to neighboring countries as Belgium, Holland and Spain. This wave does not appear to stop in the short term.

Since its apparition in the public life, the combative trade union, students and other movements supported the yellow vest protests. The extreme right wing of the National Front of Marine Le Pen tried to co-opt this space and drive it to the rotten waters of racism. They didn’t make it.

The social claim exceeded the fuel problem. It’s now demanding for a “citizen’s assembly”, a kind of social constituent power that takes the debate about the socio-economic model of the country. The question is clear ¿how is possible that France had been in 2017 the fifth wealth producer in the world while the unemployment and the outsourcing grew?

The social demands also became clear and visible despite Macron’s deafness. The demission request to the president was one of them and sound in the protests of this Saturday 8 in whole France.

— Raise of the minimum wage to 1.800 monthly Euros with impact on the whole salaries, but also the pensions and social minimum.

— VAT of 5,5% to the first need products, particularly gas and electricity.

— A progressive tax system, which have in mind people incomes.

— Restore of the rich tax which was removed by Macron, but also by his predecessors Sarcozy y Hollande

This movement had achieved his first victory as Macron, who they call the “president of the rich”, was forced to back off on the fuel price raise and ensure that there will be no increase in 2019. The accuracy of this nickname resides in the change to the tax that he granted to millionaires, forgiving them a fortune of six billion euros.

The largest central union in France, the CGT, supported the protests and demands of the yellow vest movement. They denounced that the country proposed by Macron and his powerful friends is “a society without perspective for those who produce the wealth with their work. Youth and retired workers have no future here. The government plays with fire, trivializing the demands and ignoring the trade union organizations”.

“The actives and retired workers and all the citizens feel a legitimate anger when they ask for the means to live with dignity and for more social justice. This anger includes the CGT. In this dark period where extremist ideas can emerge, the CGT calls the citizens not to let their anger be diverted by those who claim xenophobic, racist and homophobic ideas. The only way to influence in the policy of the president of the rich is to join and be together”.

They tried to criminalize and underestimate a social claim and they globalize it. They wanted to minimize and limit it to a sectorial claim but now they ask for social justice, wealth distribution and the end of the conservative french model. The world had just discovered that in the country of the equality and fraternity inequality and anger is the rule.

The rebel history of France is not ended. The Paris Commune, the French Revolution, the worker riots, the 68’ May now came back to the collective memory dressed with a yellow vest.

*By Adolfo Aguirre, Secretary of International Relations of the CTA Autónoma

[...]
["post-4599","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry
["GET
